Product FAQs
Which product should be taken when fibroids are present? Fibro Defense or Women’s Best Friend?
Fibro Defense supports normal cell function and helps balance hormones. Its 17 whole herb formula contains natural immunity boosters and circulation enhancers to help flush cellular waste. We recommend that you take Fibro Defense before and after your menstrual cycle. While on your period, you may want to consider Women’s Best Friend as it can be beneficial in easing monthly discomfort.
Whole-Herb combinations have proven helpful in supporting healthy uterine tissue but we encourage you to consult your trusted healthcare professional before starting any wellness or supplement program to determine the treatment that is right for you.
The directions say to use for 2-4 months. Does that mean that I shouldn’t take it after 4 months?
The formula should be effective within 4 months as the herbs support the body systems back into balance. We recommend after four cycles, taking a one-month break, after which, you can resume the same regimen for another 4 months. Of course, you can continue past 4 months as a preventative measure, there isn’t any harm in doing so.
Do I take it every day or just those days between my period?
Fibro Defense is best used in-between periods, so discontinue once your menstrual cycle starts and begin again once it ends.
Is it best to take before or after meals?
Actually, we suggest that you take this supplement with food, 2 capsules 2 times daily so you decide on your preference: breakfast/lunch, breakfast/dinner or lunch/dinner. Some people may have trouble remembering to take the 2 capsules twice a day, in which case, it’s perfectly fine to take the full daily dose of 4 capsules in one sitting.
Are there any foods that I should avoid while taking this supplement?
Since Crystal Star supplements are plant based, there are no known adverse interactions with food.
I have fibroids but my period stopped years ago. Since the directions say to take between periods, what do I do?
Fibro Defense can be used post menopause by taking 2 to 4 capsules daily for up to four months. After the four months, we suggest taking a one-month break. After that, you can resume Fibro Defense for another four-month cycle.
Can I take Fibro Defense while I’m menstruating if I have large fibroids?
You can continue your daily regimen through your cycle, some women find that it helps. We’ve also received feedback that it increases flow.
Can Fibro Defense be taken during pregnancy?
We do not recommend taking this supplement during pregnancy as a few of the herbs in the formula are a little too strong for a developing pregnancy. We urge you to consult with a trained and experienced herbalist (or other professional trained to work with herbs) if you want to take herbs during your pregnancy.
Should I be concerned about herbs like Dong Quai and Mexican Wild Yam possibly having an estrogen like effect causing heavier menstrual bleeding?
We use small amounts of phytoestrogen herbs like Donq Quai in our formula so we don’t expect common excess estrogen symptoms like heavy bleeding to occur. However, some women do experience temporary cycle shifts when beginning herbal therapy. While not everyone experiences these changes, they can be a good sign that the body is responding to the herbs. Cycle shifts related to herbs usually last about 1-3 months.
What’s the story on licorice and blood pressure?
Licorice is a widely studied natural antiviral, female hormone balancer, and adaptogenic herb that can help address stress and adrenal fatigue. It's also commonly used as a complementary herb used in modest amounts in both Western and Eastern herbal blends. in very high doses, the licorice "glycyrrhizin" can cause elevated blood pressure.
Since 1978 Crystal Star has focused on the functional benefits of whole herbs formulated with secondary and tertiary supporting ingredients. The amount of Licorice in Fibro Defense is just a small part of the 17 whole herb formula. However, we don’t recommend any form of licorice for people with a history of renal failure as well as people who are on heart medication or steroid drugs. Please discontinue if you become pregnant.
Can phytoestrogens increase risk for diseases like breast cancer?
While it’s true that some herbs like Dong Quai, Red Clover, and Licorice contain natural phytoestrogens (estrogen-like compounds), there is no credible evidence that moderate intake of these herbs in their whole form will increase your risk for estrogen driven disease, like breast cancer.
Dr. Linda Page combined numerous whole herbs in moderate amounts in the formulas. This type of traditional herbal approach reduces the potential for side effects or reactions, and is a primary reason many herbalists choose to blend herbs rather than use high doses of any one herb. The blended herbs in a moderate concentration act more like a food than a drug in the system. They go through normal digestion and elimination like a food, not building up in the system or burdening the body with potential toxicity.
Still, if you have an estrogen-based health problem, it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor before using herbs that can affect hormone balance. Other products on the market use concentrated sources of phytoestrogens, or may be otherwise inappropriate for your unique health needs.
